We at Bow Hammer Connection are excited to announce our first single release: 'Dubstep' from my Dance Suite in G for violin, drum kit, and sound design. It's a 21st Century dance suite, equally inspired by James Blake and J.S. Bach. Get it on iTunes here, or search for 'bow hammer connection' at your digital music outlet of choice.
As part of an exhibition celebrating Dutch sculptor Auke de Vries's 80th birthday, Slagwerk Den Haag asked me to compose a new work based on one of Auke's concepts: a conversation between the bells of a carillon and elevated percussionists. If you have ever wondered how crash cymbals sound 30 meters high in the middle of a city, come hear the premiere of From the Asphalt to the Spires by SDH and The Hague's virtuosic carillonneur Gijsbert Kok this June. See Events for performance details.
This May the Edge Ensemble will premiere five freshly commissioned works inspired by games and human play. The new pieces from Genevieve Murphy, Ethan Braun, Christopher Fox, Harry Stafylakis, and myself each showcase five deeply personal interpretations. From the financial games of Goldman Sachs, to a composer joining us on stage playing bagpipes, this program expresses the diversity and profundity of play in the human experience. Watch composer interviews on the Edge Ensemble Facebook page.
Bow Hammer Connection was selected for one of the late-night Club Showcases at this year's Classical:NEXT, an international conference around innovation in contemporary and classical music. We'll be playing in Rotterdam's jazz/hip-hop/electronics club BIRD, sharing the stage with Nonclassical's Gabriel Prokofiev and Estonian violinist/singer Maarja Nuut. Grab a ticket at the Seriously? Festival site.
As part of this year's Sounds of Silence festival, the Edge Ensemble joins forces with Catalan soprano Elisenda Pujals for a semi-improvised soundtrack to Victor Sjöström's 1928 silent film The Wind. Four of us track the intensity and presence of the wind, while Elisenda and her 'shadow' track the madness of Letty, the film's protagonist. Visit the Edge Ensemble site for more info.
We've got some exciting new venues for Music for Bars confirmed: iconic rock club Paard van Troje in The Hague, new listening-cafe Het Muzieklokaal in Utrecht, and Club Canvas at the Volkshotel in Amsterdam. Check out all the details under Events and join us for an unforgettable drink.
I have finally joined the 21st Century with an official newsletter. Read the first edition here.
Thea Derks -- Music journalist and biographer of Reinbert de Leeuw -- reviewed two concerts at the Cello Biënalle Amsterdam for Cultuurpers, including the premiere of my new game-piece Magical Quest for the Hidden Armor. Read the original Dutch review here, or brave the Google-translated English version here.
In collaboration with Slagwerk Den Haag and Club Guy & Roni's Poetic Disasters Club, our Music for Bars begins a 10-bar tour around the Netherlands this Autumn. The production is a 60-minute amplification of sonic, physical, and social elements of The Bar, combining composed, improvised, and curated works for 3 percussionists and 3 dancers who explore and break the boundaries of "normal". Check the SDH Facebook Events page for upcoming performance dates.
Video trailer is now online for Bow Hammer Connection, a new project that pairs the two most ancient ingredients of music -- melody & rhythm -- with cutting edge electronics. Our program features works by David Lang (NL-premiere), John Luther Adams (NL-premiere), David Dramm, Molly Joyce, myself (WP), and Sonic Youth. Watch the Bow Hammer Connection trailer.
Donemus Publishing will take over publication of most of my concert music, and has added me to their roster of Featured Composers. It's an honor to be joining a list that includes composers Jacob TV, Martijn Padding, Guus Janssen, and Yannis Kyriakides.
