Effusion (2013)

for flute & piano OR soprano sax & piano

Kelley Barnett, flute; Michael Kirkendoll, piano / 1 July 2013 / Cortona Sessions, Sala Neumann, Hotel Oasi Neumann, Italy

for duoSolo and the Cortona Sessions

Effusion began as an attempt to acoustically produce the indistinguishable mixture (fusion) of flute and piano timbres. Flutter-tongue flute blends with a sizzle chain on the piano strings; muted piano echoes slap-tongue flute; air blown through the flute blurs into brushing of the low-register piano strings. Within this restricted set of sounds for the instruments, I then allowed myself to pour forth musical expression (effusion) and to develop the ideas which emerged. The musical parameters less affected by timbre--rhythm, phrasing, form--became the primary vehicles for expression.
